Que pena! is a saying here in colombia....this describes the end of my night!
I'll start at the beginning...all of the new teachers went to the school today for the first time! The campus is amazing, for those of you who have seen the video or looked at pictures that I had access to, the campus is 20x better than what we saw. The superintendent gave us a tour of each building and the grounds. They have an outdoor theatre, bmx track, playgrounds for the elementary. I was able to see which room I'll be in (5E). Each classroom has it's own set of supplies, resources, materials that the last teacher left. It's great! The altitude of the campus is at about 8,000ft (nuts!) so the staff kept encouraging us to drink lots of water! After we ate lunch at the school, we had just a bit more time to relax and chat before we headed of to our afternoon activity.
We went on a turi bus which was just a city tour bus. I did not realize just how incredibly big Medellín is....truly amazing. I am incredibly blessed to be living in an extremely safe part of the city, with gates to the garages and constant security. I live right on the border between Poblado and Envigado...for those of you curious enough to be google mapping or tracking me on FindFriends :) The city is incredibly beautiful and the weather is gorgeous. I feel like I am here on vacation....it will be a tough adjustment when I actually have to do some work! The tour was a great place to get to know the other new teachers. There are truly awesome people that I will be working with. I am soo excited that everyone is so nice, helpful, and loves this city.
The most interesting part of my day was a disaster with my taxi driver. I had some friends who iiiinsisted after we all went out for dinner that they pick out which taxi I took, since I would be riding alone (roommate won't be here until next week) the driver was quiet, very nice, actually lived in miami for a short time. Hooowever, he had nooo idea where I lived....took me to a shady part of town, stopped and asked for directions at a minimum of 6 times. It was absurd. I told him where I lived very clearly, but aaapparently he was not listening. So moral of the story, a short ride which should've only cost me about 6,000pesos or so ended up costing 19,000 pesos. This tells me I MUST adjust more quickly and learn some sure fire, clear directions for the next guy :)
these are my adventures for the day...
i must say buenas noches now because that bus comes bright and early at 7am :/
much love
aimee
that rotten taxi driver!
